NYC: We upstaters go downstate!

Instead of spending a lot of money this Christmas, my family decided to give some small things, and instead spend the money on a trip to the city. A short trip, just a day and a half, but enough time to do some standard touristy things like the Empire State Building, Times Square, and 30 Rock.

I also got to spend some of my Christmas bonus at Muji and Uniqlo. Sadly, not enough time for CB2.

Aluminum Christmas Tree

We set up the christmas tree on Saturday, a little Elvis' christmas album, some brandy alexander's and waaay too many ornaments. It really looks pretty great (in a shiny pastel kitschy way) though I do miss the small of a real tree.

I found the homemade felt skirt in Jacksonville and A loves it - matches the tree and christmas deer she has.

Sewing Area Revamp

This is the not quite finished result of re-painting and re-organizing my sewing are/craft table. Painting over that hideous red was the best thing I've done in months! What a difference - light, fresh and airy.

Taking down those huge shelves, really made a difference too - while they held a lot, they were oppressing and messy. I bought an Ikea PS cabinet for storage and a new smaller table top. I'd like to move to closed door storage for the rest of my supplies as well, but I haven't yet found anything in my budget.

I also love that I can display some art and other objects in a collection that will hopefully keep growing!

Before on the left, After on the right

My fencing foil from Brimfield! (no - I don't fence!)

My card catalog project, and newest love, the thread rack!

Sanna Annukka: New Bags & Prints!

One of my favorite designer/illustrator/artists, Sanna Annukka, has new items in her shop! Cute canvas bags, and 2 new prints. I think those bags might just be worth the headache of international shipping! Only $30.

Oh, how I covet one of her prints, but they are sadly out of my range. So far I've only found them for sale in the US at Rose and Radish, but they are marking the "Autumn Gardern"print up considerably - $652!!!!! It's only 190 pounds ($281 US) in Sanna's shop.

She is also designing for Marrimekko's Spring/Summer 09 collection - I CANNOT WAIT!!

Bumbershoots! Umbrellas!

Oh happy day - I just found Umbrellas.net - all beautiful, lovely umbrellas. I love umbrellas. I have six? I think, maybe more.

$30-40 and free shipping if you buy two. More reason to finally find the perfect umbrella rack.

I really like this one in white, and this one in green.

Also! pare*umbrella - a bit more $$, but just as pretty!

Thread Rack = Organized!

As part of my sewing area make over, I bought a thread rack! Such a simple thing, but I can't believe I never bought one before! The spools look great, I no longer have to dig in a drawer for the right color!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

You can also see the newly white painted wall - bye bye gross landlord red. I need to take photos of the finished product soon, but there's still a few touches left.

The Lake

My dad lives on The Great Sacandaga Lake in upstate NY just outside of Mayfield. When I was visiting over Thanksgiving, I woke up on Friday morning, and the light was so beautiful, I ran out to take some photos. It was so quiet and lovely.

Lark Books "Pretty Little" Series

So this really is my 15 minutes of (credited) fame - I'm going to be in a craft book! My lattice smocked pillows are being included in Lark Books "Pretty Little" series - Pretty Little Pillows!

Publication is Spring 2010. (so long of a wait!)

One of the editors found images of the green smocked pillows I made on my flickr page, and emailed me. I'm finishing up on the three pillows I'm submitting along with the instructions this week.

I'm super super excited, thank you internet!!!

Saucony Catalog Shoot

Maybe this is my 15 minutes of (anonymous) fame, who knows, but my apartment was used for the fall 09 Saucony Originals catalog! My photographer friend Momo Shinzawa knows the Graphic Designer at Saucony, and suggested that my place would be great location for the catalog shoot.

It was a lot fun, and interesting to be the "homeowner" - at work I'm the one barging into other people's homes and moving around their stuff for shoots. It's funny what you expect people will respond too, and what they choose for the shots. We sometimes run into this at work, where we can be a little bit reluctant to show the clients the finished images, since we may have moved things, removed things and added objects to get the look that we want, when I'm sure they love their home as-is.

Momo did such a good job, capturing the kind of seventies-esque look they wanted. It was a fun day, they also took a lot of shots that are not in the catalog, but may be used elsewhere.

The cover/legs shot is my bedroom wall, and the others are in my living room.

Dune Obsession: Book Cover

I loved the Dune movie when I was younger (Toto soundtrack! Harkonnens! Sting!), and still have a soft spot for it, even though it's pretty silly watching it now.

Anyway, I was super happy to find a hardcover copy of the book at Savers, and have been re-reading it. I just had to post the cover - the fonts/artwork/and map are super cool.

Door Sixteen & Ferm Living

Thanks to D for sending a link to Door Sixteen, Anna Dorfman-Stark's blog. From her site - "I’m a book cover designer living with my husband Evan and dogs, Bruno and Fritz, in an 1890’s Victorian rowhouse in the City of Newburgh, NY—about 60 miles north of New York City on the west bank of the Hudson River. We wound up here in Newburgh after leaving Brooklyn a few years ago, and since buying our house in March 2006 have been swimming in repairs and renovations and dirt and plaster and paint and bricks. It never ends! I love it all (mostly). This is a place for me to share my adventures in homemaking of all kinds."

She has great style, and detailed posts about her projects!

Reading about wallpaper on Door Sixteen led me to Ferm Living's Clever Spaces blog, which is a great companion to their store. I really need to get over my fear of wallpaper hanging and add some of Ferm's delightful patterns to my apt!!

Inspiration: Sign Pen Box

I've worked for architects for 8 years, and in every single office there were boxes of Sign Pens - they are fabulous to write and draw with - smooth, heavy, figural lines.

And the BOX! so cool.

My Mag Rack!

Golly! While checking out NOTCOT.org over lunch, I stumbled across something familiar. My magazine rack!

"60s Danish Modern Occasional Table Magazine Stand Eames" - It went for $400 on ebay!

Here's the link to the listing while it's still active - notcot was right, the pics are lovely!!!

Now I'm really nervous about re-finishing, but at least now I know it's Walnut.

Dresser Swap!

This weekend was project filled! I got the last few coats of paint on my new $20 dresser, and started a total sewing area/junk room reorganization. Since the craft room is still a work in progress, I'm going to wait to post pictures until I'm finished, but here's a look at the new dresser! The Ikea Malm dresser was still in good shape, so it's my new linens dresser in our back storage room.

Honestly, entering the AT contest has motivated me to make some of the changes to the apt that I've been putting off!

It's white! super white, but I love it. While not my dream dresser (which I will continue to hunt for) this one was cheap, and cute enough to act as a stand in.

Craigslist Find!

I scored this awesome tulip style yesterday on CL, for $100! I had been debating getting either the Ikea or cb2 version, but I'm much happier getting something vintage. I'm trying to buy used as much as possible!

It's in great shape, and after some scrubbing and some bowling alley wax, it looks pretty near perfect to me. Come spring I might re-paint the base. Now I need to find two more tulip base chairs.....

When I brought it home A asked me if I'm still hunting for an authentic Saarinen version, or if I'm okay with the knock-off, and it made me consider whether I'm someone who needs to collect authentic pieces, and...I'm not! I consider each piece on it's own merits and am really not concerned about finding the designer version, but would certainly pick them up if I could afford to!

My Chair on Apartment Therapy

I submitted my chair project to AT, thinking that it could serve as a great guide for others, and I'm super happy that it got posted, but reading the comments section for your own project isn't for the thin skinned!

Regardless, I love my slightly lumpy, historically inaccurate, knock-off chair and ottoman and am happy to show it off.

Apartment Therapy: Fall Colors 2008 Contest Entry

Yesterday I hosted a photo shoot at my house for a sneaker catalog, and since the house was immaculate and I was feeling inspired by the shoot - I decided to enter the Apartment Therapy Fall Colors 2008 contest.

Here's the link to my entry

I made it to the first bracket! Woo! Be sure to vote today!!!

Update! Made it into the second bracket! Woo HOO!

Update Again! Made it to third bracket! Hot Damn!

Well, no round 4 for me, but I'm super happy to have made it as far as I did, but also a bit sad I won't be spending that cb2 $!

Next Projects

After finishing the lounge chair, I'm feeling more confident about some other pieces I've collected that need some work. I'm posting the "before" pics as motivation to get going.

1. Wood Turquoise Vinyl Chair - needs wood refinished and new seat cover.
2. Teak (I think?) End Table/Magazine Rack - someone wrote on it with sharpie - needs refinishing.
3. Pair of Danish Looking Dining Chairs - needs cleaning/refinishing and new seat covers.

Amazing internet shopping goodies! KIOSK has a pretty amazing collection of useful, unusual items from around the world including this bike basket net (my friend Momo brags about owning one of these constantly) pretty wire organizing wall clips, red cot, and something called a "calm ram".

Seriously worth browsing.

Eames Lounge Upholstery Project: DONE!

THE CHAIR IS DONE, AND I LOVE IT!

Lessons Learned:

1. Staple Guns - get an electric one!

2. Custom Buttons - best left to the professionals until I learn a home made technique.

3. Foam - While re-using the original foam and adding new foam on top saved money, it resulted in some lumps. Next time, all new foam.

4. Sanding - Start with 80 grit, not 120 or you'll be there all day.

5. Staining - let the stain penetrate a few minutes before wiping, I was too eager and had to add another coat.

Cost:
Chair $52.00
Ottoman $50.00
Designtex Vinyl $148.62
Stain $8.87
Polycrylic $14.24
Sandpaper $16.83
Buttons $40.00
Brushes $11.94
Foam $18.00
TOTAL $360.50

Time:
Disassembly 2hrs.
Sanding 1hr.
Sanding 2hrs.
Sanding/Staining 3hrs.
Upholstery 3.5hrs.
Upholstery 2hrs.
Upholstery/Re-assembly 6hrs.
TOTAL 19.5 hours

Hopefully, this can serve as a guide to anyone else who finds one of these chairs in rough shape, please email me with questions, I'm happy to offer tips and advice!
